Falsterbo Bird Show – Featherlight theatre on the Falsterbo Peninsula

When the birds start to congregate to start their southward migration it is time for Falsterbo Bird Show – a perennial nature and environmental fair with birds and nature in focus.

Falsterbo Bird Show – a Nature and Environmental fair takes place in September every year. The show takes place over three jampacked days, this year from the 30th of August - 1st of September, with bird related activities, natural experiences and a many exhibitors. The arrangement is supported by Vellinge Kommun, the Swedish Ornithological Society – Birdlife Sweden – and the Scanian Ornithological Society, which includes Falsterbo Bird Observatory.

“In short, Falsterbo Bird Show is a meeting place for people who are interested in animals and nature” says Camilla Wadlund, Environmental Strategist at Vellinge Municipality. “Guided excursions, conversations with many interesting people, a nature education childrens’ tent and ringing demonstrations are all part of the programme. In the showground you can keep up to date with the latest equipment and get advice in the area of natural and environmental issues, to name but a little of what is happening. There is also a binocular school where you can test various binoculars”, Camilla Wadlund adds.

At the show you can visit representatives from companies within the outdoor and travel markets and publishers. In this picture preparations are being made for the binocular school.

Going back to its roots – Skanör’s Heath

For the third year in a row, the show will take place in the vicinity of Skanör’s heath, beside Falsterbo Camping resort. It was here that Honey Buzzard Day took place up until 2010, when it was incorporated into Falsterbo Bird Show. “With access to the heath for birdwatching and guiding this is the optimal situation”, says Camilla Wadlund who continues “and for our visitors who require accommodation or even just a wider choice of food it is also a big advantage”.

Close to 4,000 bird and nature enthusiasts can usually be counted by the organisers over the three days of Falsterbo Bird Show.

A show for everyone

Amateur or professional, old or young – we all have something to look forward to in the packed programme and choice of activities during all the showdays. “It’s also about meeting, being out in nature, discussing what you have seen and what has happened since the last time we met” says Camilla Wadlund.

Falsterbo Bird Show has a charitable aim and the financial profit goes towards bird conservation both local and global. Profits are mainly generated from the selling of lottery tickets – visiting Falsterbo Bird Show is free
